Serenity
I loved you before I knew you,
or did I already know you, like mothers do?
In my womb, I knew you would be the quiet but impactful one.
I knew you would change my life from the very beginning,
never knowing that change would come with an ending,
a chapter closed before it truly began.
For eight months we bonded like no other,
with kicks, your fist, and your flutters,
a bond between a daughter and her mother.
I asked one thing of you: to watch after your brother.
You did just that, and gave him a fighting chance,
even though you knew your days were coming to an end.
I’ll never forget our time together,
your cries,
and the two days we had on earth’s side.
God granted me the serenity to accept what I cannot change.
However, in me, I will forever be changed,
and nothing will ever be the same.
Because of you, I carry the light you ignited from within.
I will make you proud, daughter.
Rest in heaven, my daughter. Amen.
Love, Mom
